Clothing with an inscription performs not only the typical protective function, but also becomes a means of communication which reflects the problems and interests of both the individual and the society as a whole. The popularity of clothing with inscriptions and prints causes the research into the typology of inscriptions on clothing from a linguistic standpoint. The paper is devoted to the phonetic stylistic features of the inscriptions on clothing in the Ukrainian and English languages. The research is based on 1 200 English and 365 Ukrainian inscriptions harvested from the Internet and scrutinised in terms of the phonetic stylistic means use. When analysing English and Ukrainian inscriptions on clothing, the following phonetic stylistic means were determined: rhyme, alliteration, assonance, anaphora, epiphora, anepiphora. Having analysed the obtained data quantitatively and comparatively, the features of the phonetic means use were clarified. It was determined that 157 Ukrainian inscriptions (43 %) are characterised by the use of phonetic stylistic means, while only 188 (15,7 %) of the English inscriptions display the use of phonetic stylistic means. Assonance and rhyme are defined as the most frequently used phonetic stylistic means in the Ukrainian inscriptions, while the English inscriptions are characterized by the frequent use of alliteration and assonance. Such phenomena as epiphora and anepiphora are rare in both Ukrainian and English inscriptions. The article also focuses on clarifying the role of phonetic means in creating a certain linguistic effect by putting the inscriptions on clothing. In particular, the following main functions were identified: the content and sounding amplification, memorizing, suggestive and persuasive functions facilitating.References
